Donostia San Sebastián Turismoa has embarked on promoting its tourism in recent months; the aim is to bolster the positioning of the destination in specific markets and segments, with a strategy based on quality, specialisation and furthering the knowledge of the targeted professionals. The goal has not been to grow, but rather to attract visitor profiles in line with the city’s tourism model and its commitment to balanced and sustainable development.
The tourist authority has thus taken part in different trade fairs, workshops and professional events on international and nearby markets alike. Special mention should be made of Donostia San Sebastián Turismoa being at Expovacaciones, held at the BEC in Bilbao from 8 to 10 May, where it was at the Basquetour stand providing information on San Sebastián and Gipuzkoa, particularly aimed at travellers from territories in the immediate vicinity.
From 10 to 15 May, Donostia San Sebastián Turismoa also took part in the Turespaña Spanish Tourism Summits in the United States and Canada, held in Montreal. During this fifth summit, our representatives held around 50 in-person meetings with travel agencies and tour operations from both markets. There continued to be very positive interest in San Sebastián, particularly among professionals with appropriate profiles to work the destination from a segmented and qualitative perspective.
Inspection and fam trips for specialist agents also further bolstered the promoting of the destination. After the Turespaña event in Canada, a Bespoke Compass Travel-Thallo Events representative visited San Sebastián on an inspection trip to discover first hand the tourist offering of the city. Donostia San Sebastián Turismoa help to organise the agent’s agenda and provided on-site support during the stay.
Between 15 and 17 May, six Reisebüro Ibero International GmbH Lufthansa City Center agents came on an inspection trip to San Sebastían. The tourist authority helped to organise the agenda and arranged a pintxo tour so that the visitors had the opportunity to enjoy one of the best-known aspects of the local culinary culture.
In June, Donostia San Sebastián Turismoa was also involved in the fam trip organised by the Spanish Tourist Office in Zúrich and Gipuzkoa Provincial Council, on whicheight agencies from different points of Switzerland visited the city between 12 and 15 June. Our involvement was focused on arranging a culinary experience featuring the pintxo, as a means to showcase the identity and uniqueness of the destination.
Donostia San Sebastián Turismoa has thus consolidated a strand of work based on selecting markets, the direct relationship with professional travel influencers and promoting experiences in line with the positioning of the city. A strategy that has sought to bolster awareness of San Sebastián on markets of interest, by fostering a more sustainable and targeted promotion of tourism and in line with the destination model.
