Donostians for sustainable tourism
“Sharing quality, sharing life”
Many Donostians are in favour of continuing to share our city with visitors in a balanced and sustainable manner and of safeguarding the 15,000 jobs that are generated by tourism every year. Tourism continues to underpin a range of industries and the local economy as a whole, both directly and indirectly, and 95% of the companies linked to tourism in Donostia are local SMEs.
The ‘Donostians for sustainable tourism’ campaign aims to share the voices of Donostian people that benefit from the positive effects of balanced, quality tourism. The campaign forms part of the VISIT- BIZI 2017-2021 Master Plan for Tourism in Donostia/San Sebastián which promotes concepts such as sustainability, striking a balance between residents, visitors and businesses, quality of life and quality of visits and the authentic nature of Donostia/San Sebastián as a destination.
Every day, shopkeepers, guides, service companies, and small producers showcase the essence of Donostia to those who visit us.

Tourism is evolving globally in an unstoppable trend: new online economy models, the rising quality of life among older people, the democratization of travel… This new way of traveling brings new challenges that must be addressed, but if managed responsibly and sustainably, it also represents a great opportunity for the development and well-being of the people of Donostia. It can help create more employment and entrepreneurship opportunities, contribute – through conference tourism – to energizing our industrial, business and R&D sectors, and promote the dissemination of Basque culture, language and identity worldwide, while also offering us greater openness and exposure to other cultural influences.
That is why many Donostians support the idea of continuing to share our city with visitors, and through this campaign, a number of examples of local entrepreneurs, small or medium-sized businesses and family-run companies from various sectors are given a voice – all of whom benefit from the positive effects of tourism. Like them, every day, numerous shopkeepers, guides, service providers and small producers showcase the essence of Donostia to those who visit us.
Tourism accounts for 13.4% of the city’s GDP. Each tourist spends an average of €123.60 per day; in 2015, tourism generated €1 billion and 15,000 jobs in our city. It’s also important to note that 95% of businesses linked to the tourism sector in Donostia / San Sebastián are local SMEs.
Although tourism is often associated with hospitality and accommodation, in Donostia, many entrepreneurs and local companies from a wide range of sectors are directly or indirectly impacted by it: museums, cultural venues, shops, tour guides, research centres/hospitals/companies linked to conference tourism, small businesses offering services to visitors, farmers / livestock breeders / fishers who supply products to restaurants, and many more.
This campaign is part of the Donostia / San Sebastián VISIT-BIZI 2017-2021 Master Plan, the result of over a year of technical work involving experts, industry professionals, all political parties, citizens, and San Sebastián Turismo & Convention Bureau, which brings together 325 associated companies, nearly all of them local SMEs. The plan places citizens at the heart of the project and is committed to social, environmental and economic sustainability, to a balance between residents, visitors and businesses, to the quality of life and visitor experience, and to the authenticity of the destination, promoting its identity, uniqueness, culture, language and traditions.
